A double from Callum Ross helped keep Barrow Town in the East Midlands Counties League title race as they beat Holbrook 3-0 on Wednesday.

With leaders Basford United having won 2-0 at Thurnby Nirvana 24 hours earlier to open a five-point gap, it was crucial that the Riversiders responded positively.

They can do nothing tomorrow, though, as they are without a game while Basford go to sixth-placed Radcliffe.

The best that Blaby & Whetstone Athletic can hope for now is a top-three finish. They sit in fourth, just behind Borrowash Victoria, and have a tough derby encounter at home to Aylestone Park.

Borrowash entertain Bardon Hill Sports, while in-form Holwell Sports aim to continue climbing the chart by claiming the points at home to Graham St Prims.

Thurnby will be looking to bounce back from their midweek defeat when they host St Andrews. They had climbed to fifth on the back of a four-game winning streak only to run into the title favourites.

There has been some furious activity at the foot of the table and the battle to get out of the relegation zone seems to take a new twist with every game.

Ibstock United climbed out of the bottom two last week at the expense of Ellistown, whose reaction was to bank a win of their own on Tuesday to edge back in front of United.

Carl Eagling bagged a hat-trick in Ellistown's 3-1 verdict over Lutterworth Athletic.

Ellistown visit bottom of the table Radford in what amounts to a six-pointer, while United are at home to a Gedling Miners Welfare side who still need a win or two to ensure they stay clear of trouble.

That also applies to Anstey Nomads who welcome fellow strugglers Greenwood Meadows to Cropston Road.
