Objections to the veil based on fear

A fair number of readers have expressed their objections to the wearing of the burkha by certain Muslim women. Almost all objections are based on the fear of the unknown, not knowing what is inside the "wrapper".

During the heydays of the Commonwealth, various peoples, their costumes and traditions were accepted and respected. The administration of Commonwealth worked without any objections.

By contrast, as an independent retailer, I strongly dislike and object to hoodies. I would most certainly like them banned, but our leader, call me Dave, says "hug a hoodie".

There is an alternative explanation to the objections to burkha. Could it be simply that there is a subliminal link between our perceived fear and our bombing of two Muslim countries, with shock and awe for the last eight years, and that we anticipate reprisals.

“Bob, can I ask where your B&B is so I don't ever make the horrendous mistake of staying there?”

“I don't think it is fear of the unknown either, except possibly on the part of those who cover up completely.

I am fervently in favour of equality of importance between the sexes and do not agree with any practices that demean men or women, or prevent them leading a proper life. I am also against preventing females from being educated.”

“I don't think that peoples objections to the burka as anything at all to do with fear.In my opinion, it as more to do with the fact that it is alien to Western values and is a sign of separatism. The wearing of the burka and nijab is not a religious requirement and I honestly think that more and more muslim women are wearing them as a sign of defiance to the West.”

“Are you real, Bob? Do people like you really still exist in this country? And to think you actually vote in elections! The Human Rights acts are nothing to do with the Conservative Party - haven't you noticed who were in power for the last thirteen years?
The only party in this country which does not fully support the banning of discrimination on the grounds of colour, race, religion and sexual orientation is the BNP. I suggest you join them if you are not already a member. When I read such prejudiced rubbish, I am ashamecd to be white and British. You are certainly totally unfit to run a B & B.”

    “Hi John,
I like Living in a free society too, If only the conservatives would help me to run my local BnB the way I want, without interference from any EU human rights. I should be able to chose who I allow to stay in my place. If I want to exclude people who ware the Burka, Gays, Blacks, Irish I should be allowed as my right to run my business as I choose.”
