Two policemen brought a woman back to life who was found "dead" in the street.

The woman's heart had stopped, she was not breathing and she was stone cold after collapsing yards from her home.

Sergeants Nick Davies and Gary Butterworth gave her cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and successfully brought her round.

Now the pair are to be awarded for their life-saving efforts.

Sergeants Davies and Butterworth were called to the woman's home in Hinckley by her concerned son on August 18 last year.

The woman, who has not been named, had arrived home drunk and had an argument with her new husband before running out of the house naked in the pouring rain. The two officers searched the area and found the woman lying on the ground further down the road.

Sgt Butterworth said: "We got there and it was absolutely pouring with rain – a really horrendous storm.

"The son had said there had been an argument. The husband, who answered the door, let us in. He was dressed in a suit and he just said they had got married and she had run out of the house with no clothes on.

"We got the woman's mobile phone number and rang her.

"We could just hear her murmuring. But we could also hear that she was outside somewhere. Then the murmuring stopped.

"We went outside and found her about 10 doors up the street. She was lying on the ground, naked, and as cold as a stone. It was obvious she was dead.

"We started CPR and brought her back round."

The officers put her in their police car to warm her up and paramedics arrived to take over.

Following the incident, it emerged that the woman suffered from epilepsy and a kidney condition and had been drinking alcohol against the orders of her doctor.

On Thursday, at Enderby's police headquarters, the two policemen will be awarded resuscitation certificates by the Royal Humane Society. The award, made on the recommendation of Leicestershire police, will be presented by the Royal Humane Society's secretary, Dick Wilkinson.

He said: "They richly deserve the awards. But for them, this incident could have had a terrible outcome."

Less than three months after bringing the woman back to life, Sgt Davies, helped resuscitate a colleague in Hinckley town centre after he suffered a heart attack. Pc Mike Smith collapsed while on the beat in November. He stopped breathing and Sgt Davies helped massage his heart to keep him alive. Pc Chris Hall, Pc Ken Fricker and Inspector Tony Lambert also took part in the first aid.

A paramedic arrived within three minutes and used a defibrillator to shock his heart back into action.

Sgt Davies said: "It felt like a lot longer but it was only two minutes. We continued doing CPR while the paramedic got his out his defibrillator.

"He had three or four shocks with that. We got a faint pulse and he was taken to George Eliot Hospital, in Nuneaton. He had gone. He had died for three minutes."
