John Ferneley College was last inspected in December 2009 when it was rated good, with many outstanding features.
Inspectors said excellent leadership and vision by Mr Robinson and the governing body had led to a successful transformation from a small middle school to a growing secondary. They said any initial doubts by parents had been successfully allayed.
The report said that the school's new building had allowed a new approach to lesson timetables, the curriculum and the management of teaching and learning, including longer teaching sessions.
Inspectors said the quality of teaching was good, with the majority of lessons at a very high standard.
