Pupils at Uplands Infant and Junior School, in Highfields, Leicester, were told that once recycled, the oil they had collected would provide enough electricity to make 84,000 cups of tea. Head teacher Mark Ingham said the project had been "a real eye-opener".
He said: "It's a lesson we should all learn from.
"It's shocking to think that all of this oil would have ended up in landfill or being poured down the drain."
The project was organised by Recycle for Leicester in partnership with waste management company Biffa and green energy company Living Fuels.
Once the used cooking oil is collected, Living Fuels refines it into a biofuel called LF100, which is used to create electricity. The educational scheme is now set to run at other schools across the region.

“Well done to Leicester Mercury reporter. The headline for this story is a pun worthy of the tabloids.
On the story. A very useful and interesting project for the children to complete.”
