Further to the news of a fox attacking twin baby girls, I write of our troubles with foxes.

Our garden is repeatedly damaged by foxes digging massive holes and tunnels and taking the fish from the pond.

We made various attempts at discouraging them, such as placing boulders and netting in the way and putting pellets out to repel them, but to no avail.

In the end we contacted the Environmental Health Department of the council only to be told that they would do nothing and that "man must learn to live in harmony with Nature"!

Our next move was to contact Councillor Peter Coley, who is the Lib Dem councillor for our ward. He came, viewed the huge gaping hole and tunnel and demanded: "Do you have a licence to keep foxes?"

Ha, ha and ha! Just as well that he is a personal friend!

Despite the best efforts of the pest control chappy, the cunning foxes disappear for a while only to return again and again!

I wonder how long before such a tragedy as happened in Homerton, East London, happens here in Leicester.

Bob Taylor, Western Park.

“I certainly wouldnt want to doubt the word of a mother whose baby has been injured without some very good evidence. In a radio interview i heard, several people in the area of this incident said that the foxes are very tame and fearless, because they had been getting fed and encouraged by numerous people that liked them in their back gardens. One woman sheepishly admitted to feeding them chicken legs!

They are an attractive animal - but they dont belong in residential areas. And their faeces/urine really does stink - I think they should be humanely culled whenever their presence is noticeable in back gardens.”

“I think it will be quite some time before a fox attacks anyone or anything and I still find that particular story hard to believe simply because foxes tend to run a mile if they see anyone. It would assist no end if people stopped feeding the damn things and making them tame and fearless though.. I respect them for the wild creatures they are but treating them as pets... really!
Perhaps the addition of a canine friend to your home may deter them?”
