Today, this bungalow in Knighton is a bright, airy space, light bouncing off the walls and rooms that manage to be huge yet cosy.

But it wasn't always this way. When Peter Creese moved in just four short years ago, the bungalow had been empty for a year and was a decidedly different prospect.

Just one light dimly lit the hallway, the wiring had not been done since it was built in the 1950s and the decor was old-fashioned and tired.

It needed a complete overhaul – which is just what Peter gave it. Although he hired experts to do the technical bits like rewiring, plumbing and putting in a new heating system, the rest of the look of the home is all down to him.

"When I moved in the bungalow was an absolutely wreck," he said. "Every wall has been re-plastered, every room has been re-done.

"I decided to paint the walls in an off-white throughout the house, with carpets and furnishings co-ordinated."

Peter's turned out to be a bit of a natural at decorating, but the house itself was to lend a hand.

Taking up carpets, he discovered a wonderful original oak floor, which has now been polished and restored to its former glory.

A multi-fuel stove has been added which looks great and adds a cosy warmth of an evening.

The three bedrooms are all of a good size and the whole property is finished to a very high standard.

Upstairs is an "absolutely enormous" loft which is ripe for conversion into perhaps another bedroom or a home office space.

The roof also has some interesting period features of glass tiling. The bungalow is in a quiet cul de sac, and backs onto Knighton Park.

Walking over the threshold into the reception hall, with its original flooring, you are led into the sitting room.

The spacious room houses the multi-fuel burner and French doors which open up to a beautiful back garden. West-facing and spacious, with a raised patio dining area, steps down to a shaped lawn, and well stocked flower beds. The kitchen has been completely re-fitted and updated, and a nearby breakfast room provides the perfect space to sit with a coffee and enjoy the papers.

Outside, the front driveway has been block paved and there's plenty of off road parking.

Asked what he loved most about the house, and he has no hestitation: "It's such a bright area now," he says. "The whole house is so light now that you can't believe what it used to be like."
