A woman who created a cafe which aims to give young mums a place to socialise has been nominated for a national award.

Cheryl Hawkins, 33, of Knighton, who runs The Feeding Room, in South Wigston, has been put forward for an accolade by customers who say her business provides healthy meals for children.

She will find out in April if it has made the shortlist for the prestigious Organix Food Hero Award.

Her cafe has no fryers and all meals are made from scratch by Cheryl.

Chips are also banished from the menu and a children's play area has been built.

She said: "I have a young son and a young daughter so I run the cafe as if I were cooking for them at home."

Cheryl says the play area, which is built into the cafe, makes the place very popular for parents with young children. It boasts a train set, action figures, books and a tea set.

A spokeswoman from awards organisers Whats On 4 Little Ones said: "We have received a nomination from a member of the public saying how impressed they were by The Feeding Room.

"Cheryl, as a mum, obviously cares a lot about her children eating healthily and it's wonderful that she is doing so well."

“I hope more people will take up this idea and open more cafes like this across Leicestershire as this sounds like a great place to eat and talk with other parents in a child friendly atmosphere.”

“What a good idea - On the occasions when I take my daughter out for lunch as a treat, it is very difficult to find somewhere that offers anything other than nuggets and chips. If you want anything healthy then you need to order an adult meal for her.

I assume that this is also a breastfeeding friendly area, as it is also difficult to find somewhere to feed without being glared at, leered at, or asked to move to the allocated breastfeeding room i.e the smelly baby changing area or toilet.”
