“The whole basis of democracy is having the opportunity to choose, even those who decided not to exercise that opportunity made a chioce and on that basis the winning candidate has just as strong a mandate whether the turnout is high or low.
Best of luck to whoever wins!”

“A complete waste of money. Why can we not have votes on real issues liked the EU or local planning which was also promised. Corby says it all which has always been used as a bench mark. An independant got the vote. I have lost faith in currupt labour and conservatives and useless lib dems.”

“If the turnout is only 16%, then I think the winner, whoever it is, should only receive 16% of the £75,000 of tax payers money.
But seriously the Con government has brought democracy into disrepute with this shambles of an election. No wonder omnishambles is the favourite word this year.
No one can possibly have a mandate to do anything with such low figures.
I see the Con candidate in the Manchester Parliamentary election managed only 754 votes. As the Con government has drastically cut Manchester's grant, (in contrast to giving leafy Con voting Dorset an increase), what do they expect.”

“There is no surprise in this story at all. It has been a lack-lustre performance by all three candidates leading up to this election and with little knowledge of what it is all about, the time of year and there being a lot of politics in it is it any wonder the turnout is so low.
The extraordinary thing in all of this is the person elected will have no real mandate as they will probably only receive 35% of and 18% turnout which is pretty abysmal really!!”

“One BBC reporter just summed up what is probably the primary reason for the apathy.......I concurr.
"the voters were never persuaded they needed an elected police and crime commissioner" Simon Preston.
The vast majority of people who go about their daily lives having no interaction with Police, will have little knowledge of what's wrong with Policing...it's not on their agenda.....it's not discussed amongst their friends, family or peer groups. Therefore, it would clearly be simpler to be apathetic as most people have been.
Not very responsible in my view but a sign of our selfishness and lack of social responsibility.”
