Voters were due to find out by the end of today who has been elected police and crime commissioner (PCC).

Polling stations were open between 7am and 10pm yesterday, with many appearing to attract only a slow trickle of voters as the day went on.

Labour candidate, assistant mayor of Leicester Sarah Russell, said yesterday: "It has been really slow in the day but hopefully, as the evening goes on and people get home from work, it will get busier."

Tory, retired Air Chief Marshall Sir Clive Loader, a parish councillor in Wing, said: "We have been out encouraging people to vote. We will see what the outcome is."

“Democracy didn't work in these elections because the Con government refused to allow it to work. The election was a complete shambles from start to finish.

I guess the Cons just want as many Con PCCs elected as possible to maximise the amount of privatisation of the Police they can push through afterwards.

But with turnouts this low and many people not having any clue whatsoever about this election there is no mandate for any so called 'winning' candidate.”

“Jonger - what about those that were actually voicing their opinions by staying away, those who didn't want any of them to get the job? Should you be forced to vote for someone you don't want in power just so you can have a voice?”

    “Bob
The winning candidate has to get 50% of the votes cast either as first choice or if no clear winner the second choice votes are counted.
They WILL have a mandate because only votes cast are counted, not the % of eligible voters.
If people cannot be bothered to vote its their loss and they cannot criticize the result if they couldn't be bothered to voice an opinion.
    Unfortunately that's how democracy works.”

“If the winning candidate fails to obtain at least 20% of the electorate voting for him or her on first choice votes with at least a 35% turnout, then he or she will have no mandate.

But the Con government will be guilty of bringing democracy into disrepute if the average vote is under 25% of the electorate.

These were dreadfully shambolic unwanted elections and the Con government should be ashamed of themselves.”
