Leicester Mercury

I see you have published articles recently on the fate of The Palace Theatre.

I was at Leicester Art College as a national diploma student, studying painting at special level in 1959-60, and spent much time sketching the old buildings of the city.

It was a very sad period in the city's history as so much of old Leicester was being demolished, including the Theatre Royal, Opera House and Palace Theatre.

I was fortunate enough to go to many performances at all three before they fell to the demolition hammer.

I enclose a photograph of my drawing of the Palace, very shortly before it disappeared.

As you can see, the demolition firm's banner is unfurled across the front and the signs have been removed.

The interior was a Turkish fantasy, I seem to remember, and I especially remember a wonderful performance of a Shakespere production there with the great actor Miles Malleson – but what the play was I cannot remember!

Robert Parker, Wolverhampton.
