Schoolgirl Paveen Ria is celebrating after being crowned Miss Teen Leicester.

The 15-year-old's win is even sweeter because she only entered after being spotted holding the coat of a friend who was having her photo taken for the contest.

Paveen, a pupil at Beauchamp College, in Oadby, said: "I was at the Clothes Show, in Birmingham, last year with a friend and she saw an advert for Miss Teen Great Britain and wanted to enter there and then.

"I held her coat while she had her picture taken by a woman who was an agent for the event. The woman saw me and persuaded me to enter, too."

Paveen, of Leicester Forest East, won the Leicester round of the competition and was chosen from 2,000 entrants nationwide to be one of the 65 teenagers at the grand final, Miss Teen Great Britain, held in Blackpool.

She said: "It was brilliant. I felt very privileged and honoured to be representing Leicester at the event.

"I did not win but it was an amazing experience and I think I will enter next year's Miss Teen Great Britain competition, too."

Her father, Harjinder Singh, said he was very proud of his daughter.

He said: "She handled the pressure of the competition very well. It could not have been easy to be up on that stage with hundreds of people looking on."

The national beauty pageant is open to girls aged between 13 and 18.
