A pensioner died in hospital four days after suffering multiple injuries in a car crash, an inquest heard.

Kenneth Watts, 77, pulled out of a T-junction on a country lane into the path of another car.

Mr Watts, of Willow Drive, Countesthorpe, suffered fractured ribs and a broken pelvis in the collision. He was taken to hospital, where he later suffered multiple organ failure.

The inquest, held at Loughborough, heard that the collision happened at the junction of Baggrave Hall Road and Twyford Road, near South Croxton, on June 12.

Mr Watts was driving his Renault Clio at about 10.40am when it collided with the Ford Focus driven by David Thompson, of Oakham.

Mr Thompson told the hearing: "I was on the Queniborough Road. As I approached the T-junction, I noticed a car emerging from it. I can't tell you with certainty whether it stopped or not.

"I estimate I was travelling at 50 mph. I couldn't see the car while it was emerging because of the trees and the undergrowth.

"I was suddenly aware it was right in front of me and was in the middle of the road.

"Realising it had emerged on to the road, I braked but it was too late. I crashed almost at right angles into the car.

"I wasn't injured though there was bruising on my chest and a slight cut on my left hand."

Mr Thompson said he went to check on Mr Watts, who was alive but distressed. He said other motorists then stopped to help and called the emergency services.

Police accident investigator Pc Alan Moore carried out a reconstruction of the accident and said Mr Watts would have been able to see the oncoming Ford before he pulled out.

He concluded Mr Thompson had been driving at 35mph to 40mph in the 60mph speed limit zone and acted promptly to try to avoid the collision by turning and braking.

He said Mr Watts turned into Mr Thompson's path while turning right out of the junction.

Deputy coroner Carolyn Hull recorded a verdict of accidental death.

“What a distressing time for all, its such a shame. I wish both families well.”
