Performance enlivened by heckler
Likeable yet introspective Matthew enjoys plaudits as one-third of feted sketch group Pappy's, but on his own he floundered and garbled, and was embarrassingly lacking in amusing material.
Instead, he presented the room with a series of laptop presentations detailing his adventures on Twitter.
What often started as promising set-ups ended frustratingly without clear punchlines, and as the unfinished self-absorbed anecdotes piled up, the audience became restless.
Before long, he was being heckled by members of the crowd old enough to be his parents, if not grandparents, and to make matters worse, they were getting bigger laughs than he was.
However, the repartee which grew between Crosby and Tony – raconteur and bemused ringleader of the older gentlemen – turned out to be the performer's salvation.
His deviations from the script to interact with members of the audience were fresh and unpredictable, and gave the set a desperately-needed boost.
Perhaps if he spent less time online and interacted more with real people, he might find, as happened tonight, true inspiration.
