Plans for £150m Leicester business quarter moves step closer
A £150m business quarter is a step closer after plans for a new mail distribution centre were given the go-ahead.
Councillors have approved proposals to build a new Royal Mail base in Charter Street, Leicester.
Leicester City Council and regeneration company Prospect Leicestershire want the Royal Mail to move from its office in Campbell Street.
This would then make way for an office and leisure development, or business quarter around the train station.
More than £9m will be spent on the move but Royal Mail has not yet openly said it will take up the offer.
Councillor Patrick Kitterick, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Now it's a case of finalising the designs and putting it out to tender for it to be built."
A Royal Mail spokesman said it was still "considering the proposal".
The plans include building a mainly single storey building with a small first floor to house equipment. There will be 104 car parking spaces for staff and a seating or picnic area.

“What a great opportunity to provide the general public with somewhere to park when collecting an undelivered parcel. No - let's just create a staff car park only and make the area surrounding it pay and display so we can make some more money. Why don't these people think before implementing these plans?”
