Plans for Scout hut considered
Councillors last night debated controversial plans to lease a disused former Scout hut to a Muslim community group.
The discussion was triggered by a 1,529-name petition submitted to the city council by residents of Thurnby Lodge.
They oppose As Salaam Trust's plan to take over the disused building, in Nursery Road, because they say the plan would generate extra traffic.
They said the Scout hut should be made available to the wider community and have staged regular protests outside a nearby community centre, where Muslims pray.

Yesterday's meeting at the Town Hall was attended by representatives of As Salaam Trust and The Forgotten Estates group – set up by residents against the plan.
As Salaam Trust presented a petition of 3,300 names at the meeting, however, it was not accepted by the council as full details of the people who had signed it were not included.
Trust spokesman Mohammed Lockhat said this was because supporters feared intimidation from protesters.
