A permanent home has been found for a plaque commemorating the life of Elephant Man Joseph Merrick.

The black granite plaque will be presented to Moat Community College on Thursday.

It will later be placed on the wall at the college entrance.

The college occupies the site of the workhouse, to which Merrick was admitted in 1879 and 1880.

Historian Stephen Butt will make the presentation on behalf of Friends of Joseph Carey Merrick.

Mr Butt said the plaque had been fixed to the wall of the Hippodrome Theatre, on the corner of Wharf Street and Gladstone Street, in 2004, and was removed in 2008 before the theatre was demolished.

He said: "The friends are delighted that Moat has agreed to accept it."
