Cuts in road safety funding will not lead to any speed cameras being switched off in Leicestershire, it has emerged.

The Leicestershire Safety Camera Partnership said it would not turn off or remove any of its fixed-camera sites around the county or cut back its mobile operation.

The partnership issued the statement after it was revealed that the Government had slashed the money given to local authorities for road safety.

However, the partnership added that the cuts meant no new cameras would be installed.

Hema Lad, from the Leicestershire Safety Camera Partnership, said: "There are no plans to reduce the number of safety cameras which are run by the local road safety partnership, made up of the county and city councils, police and other groups.

"Evidence from accident statistics shows that the cameras have been effective in reducing casualties and to remove them would be a retrograde step."

The government has cut £38 million of the £95 million that had been due to go to local authorities for road safety.

“Colin & Graham you miss my point, I am not condoning anyone who breaks the law however cuts in public spending are coming therefore priorities need to be made.Keep the front line services going or lose them & keep the cameras. When the choice has to be made to continue to run these 'safety' cameras or to cut front line council services I sincerely hope that the fixed & temp cameras are the first thing to go!!!”

“Surely the time has come to follow Swindon & Oxford councils & scrap these cameras! Stop persecuting the motorist & use the money saved on helping front line services that are about to be axed.”
