Plenty of reasons in favour of lanes
It is not surprising to see that, once again, the residents of Glen Parva are doing their best to scupper a genuine attempt to improve public transport for people in Leicester and South West Leicestershire.
I am talking about the scheme to improve bus services on the A426 for the 84 and 85 buses by introducing bus lanes.
This has the finance and backing from the Department of Transport, Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council, and the bus company – not to mention the people who use the bus each day.
I've taken the trouble to read through the literature, claims and counter-claims and can only come to one conclusion. This is another example of "Not in my back yard" – pure and simple.

These militants are really only concerned about the noise and disruption that would be (temporarily) caused while the work is done. They cannot see beyond that into the future potential of improved bus services for all.
Their arguments against the scheme are at best spurious and mostly, purely selfish.
No thought is given to passengers using the route, who would welcome an easing of congestion for journeys made into town each day, or people who leave their cars at home to use public transport.
As I read in their literature, the people of Glen Parva prefer to drive to Leicester than use the bus.
Why? Because the bus gets delayed. Why? Because there are no bus lanes to give the bus a chance to keep to its timetable.
I see they have set up an e-petition for people to object; it's a pity there isn't a similar e-petition for the "silent majority" of users to register their support for the scheme.
As the consultation period is now over, all I could find was an e-mail address for comments.
So come on bus users of Blaby, Whetstone, Cosby, Lutterworth, Countesthorpe. Please send an e-mail in support of the proposals to the address below.
We should at least try to give the council a balanced view for all bus users on the routes.
S Eason, Blaby.
