A Leicestershire rider is celebrating under-18 championship glory at the one of the sport's biggest international events.

Aaron Pole, from Enderby, was part of the three-man under-18 team representing Rocketman Suzuki GB in the Pont-de-Vaux 12-hour race in France.

The 18-year-old, and team-mates Laurence Stopps and Jak Griffiths, managed a combined total of 156 laps of the circuit over the three four-hour races in the three-day event – the most of any under-18 team.

Pole said he was "over the moon" with the performance. "We were expecting to do okay but we never even imagined that we would do as well as we did," he said, after the team finished 27th overall out of the 104 that entered.

Pole is now looking to concentrate on his individual racing with his next challenge being the Weston Beach Race coming up next month in Weston-super-Mare.

But Pole said that he could miss future races, if he is unable to get any sponsorship to help fund the costs.

"If I had had to pay for the week at Pont-de-Vaux myself, it would have cost me about £2,000," he said.

"Apart from travel costs, to keep racing at a high standard you need to make sure the bike's parts are top quality and in good condition.

"Hopefully if we can raise funds I will be able to keep racing internationally."
