Windows of a police patrol car were smashed while officers were investigating a road accident.

Police officers got out of the vehicle at a county travellers' site to ask about the accident and while they were there found suspected stolen property including three mini JCB diggers.

The windows of the police car were broken while it was parked at the Costalot site in Barlestone Road, Bagworth, from about 4pm on Monday.

The police were seeking information about an accident which happened in Bosworth Road, Barlestone, at about 10.15am the same day.

It involved a collision between a silver Vauxhall Corsa and red 4 X 4 vehicle, possibly a Mitsubushi, which were travelling in opposite directions. The 4 X 4 failed to stop.

No-one was injured but Hinckley police said they would like to hear from any witnesses.

Pc Simon Barker said: "We would urgently like to speak to the driver of this vehicle and would appeal for them or anyone who may know their identity to contact us."

Investigations are continuing into the suspected stolen property which was found at the site, which police said was worth a substantial amount of money.

The items included three diggers, a roller and a diesel fuel tank.

No arrests were made and inquiries are continuing.
