About 20,000 postcards are to be sent to city politicians to protest against Government cuts.

Public sector union Unison is distributing the postcards to people across the city, and asking them to send them to city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby and local MPs.

Each postcard is printed with a message opposing cuts to council services.

Leicester branch secretary Gary Garner said: "The city council is cutting back on essential services because of Government cuts – but public services are more important than ever in an economic downturn.

"Elderly people's homes are set to be closed down or sold-off, for example, and people need to stand-up and show their opposition to it.

"We're handing out these postcards at workplaces around the city.

"We're urging people to send them to their local MP, and to the city mayor. We're hoping to get the message across that people want to see frontline services protected."

Sir Peter said: "Councils have been put in an incredibly difficult position because of Government cuts. I sympathise with Unison's stance, and I'll continue to take the message to the Government that their funding cuts are hitting the most vulnerable."

“Nice to see Unison trotting and chanting around the City on Saturday good on them.Could they not spend their time having a march against the cuts that the man they voted in as Mayor,or the cuts to clowncil employees.Maybe slowsby would be in the Mercury saying he would join them.
Then again they may get some support from Useless And Foolish in return for assisting them on their "keeping fit" stroll on Saturday.”

“UNISON, come on then, please come up with a viable alternative to rectify the problems this country finds itself in. The city council wont listen to you, it listens to no one apart from itself. The mayor and his bunch of cronies seem to think they are entitled to pay rises of 100% when the rank and file workers are having a pay freeze or losing their jobs.”

“Unison is always there to complain when they don't like a decision the government is making which affects jobs. But I would like to hear what they propose is done in lieu of the cuts they are protesting against. What alternative are they suggesting? Right, no alternative because all they do is complain. Typical.”

“Had another thought on this nonsence idea. Why dont Unison just give slowsby all the cards at once.Save The Planet. Are they all from recycled /renewable sources? What will happen to them when slowsby has read each one individually[!].Will someone remove the stamps and send them to a charity?Considering Unison sponsered slowsby I am sure he will oblige their whims with a nod and a wink. Daft really!!”

“Can the world of commerce provide services fairly, based on social justice? #
Was our society in the era before the welfare state better? Look at recent history to find any examples of better private provision.

I'm struggling to think of any.

Company executives plunder their own companies for staggering salaries and bonuses and create growth by squeezing ordinary workers wages ever tighter. Generally, these companies produce things that we dont really need ( a new phone, IPad, flat screen TV etc), Does the privatised gas and electricity provider market set a good example? Companies are greedily circling public services looking for opportunities to make profit with poorer service standards and low paid, demotivated workers (private care homes are a good recent example). Cameron and his business backers are rubbing their hands waiting for your money...”

“I earn a set sum of money every year. From that I have to pay all my bills etc. If these people want the council to spend more then they will have to tax more and I will have less disposable income. Then I will have to make CUTS into the money that I pay to local businesses and shops. This will lead to them having less income and being able to afford fewer staff and have to make CUTS to their own payrollsl.

Can someone explain how this will help the economy rise from the current downturn (that is mentioned in this story).

Why are jobs at the council more important than jobs in every other sector of the community?”

“Nice to see old slowsby being able to comment on government cuts that affect us all whilst at the same time wanting a massive pay rise.Maybe he can say where the money comes from.Seems to be a mentality of sack here, close there but give me the money. If he realy believes he is worth a few quid he should cancel his wages and put his bank account details public so that anyone can send him what they believe he is worth[or ask for a refund!]”
