Posties in Market Harborough are ordered to get off their bikes for health and safety reasons
Posties in Market Harborough are angry after being told to give up their bikes for health and safety reasons.
Workers at the Royal Mail sorting office in the town have been told to switch from pedal power to vans or trolleys as they can hold more.

Racks at the Market Harborough sorting office
Management say bikes are no longer suitable as postmen and women are handling more parcels than in the past. They say bikes cannot carry as much and that they are worried about the impact of the increased weights on workers' backs.
The Harborough sorting office is the latest of four in Leicestershire to have made the change. Staff have been ordered to hand back 20 cycles.

One postie, who did not want to be named, said: "It means staff who use Royal Mail bikes to cycle to and from work will now have to buy and use their own bikes, walk, or revert to using cars, which isn't very environmentally friendly.
"A number of posties voiced their disagreement with this policy to the management, but were told there would be no exceptions and that they must return the bikes.
"It is all about health and safety."
The postman said they now used "high capacity" trolleys to deliver mail. It means workers can carry more mail and bulkier parcels, without the need to have numerous delivery bags dropped off at various points on their deliveries.
He said: "A number of deliveries have also been 'paired-up,' which means two posties now use a van to cover two deliveries, instead of using bikes.
"But to us posties at Market Harborough, where they have invested in six new vans, it doesn't make economical or environmental sense."
Posties in Melton and at two sorting offices in Leicester – Loughborough Road and Campbell Street – have already switched.
Royal Mail spokeswoman Morag Turnbull defended the move, saying it was part of a £2 billion modernisation.
"This is part of one of the biggest transformations undertaken in UK industry and enables us to respond to changes within the postal market," she said.
"Not every sorting office is being asked to give up the bicycles. It depends on the machines and the local area.
"As we deliver fewer letters but more parcels than we did in the past, we are removing bicycles from our operations in Market Harborough.
"They are being replaced with vans and trolleys that enable us to take the weight off the shoulders of our staff and therefore deliver mail more securely and safely."

“"Royal Mail spokeswoman Morag Turnbull defended the move, saying it was part of a £2 billion modern-isation. This is part of one of the biggest transformations undertaken in UK industry and enables us to respond to changes within the postal market," she said."
So why blame health or safety and why try to make believe they are doing it for the "posties" (those hard work men and women who deliver our post daily during all weathers and conditions). This is of course a typical of the usual sad and weak management, lacking in confidence and ability to sell its proposed policy, it tries to force it through on the grounds of health and safety and caring for its workforce. In doing this they can of course declare they had to do it for health and safety reasons and avoid accepting the responsibility for their actions and blame "elfansafety". Have they no courage or faith in their managerial policies, are they not prepared to accept any responsibility for their actions?
Have management (by that I mean those that thought up the policy) ever tried pulling a high capacity" trolley up and down hills all day, bumping up and down high curbs, trying to get between cars, ensure its reasonable safe and not-in- its-self, causing an obstruction whilst actually doing a full "posties" shift, day after day. I doubt it; it's a typical idea of a clueless managerial class that should have been abolished years ago. If the workers say bikes suitably you can bet your bottom dollar they are right and know what they are talking about.
Secondly I thought we were in the age of austerity, downsizing and consideration of environmental fac-tors but obviously not Royal Mail management with £2 billion modernisation and introducing more vehi-cles to our already heavily overcrowded roads. Still it's paid for by the customers or/and taxpayers and the mangers will not doubt be well rewarded when it is sold off to a private company for peanut. Just remember in the recent and previous bad weather, these men and women "posties" carried and delivered the mail on foot walking in condition when side roads were unusable and most would not venture out. They deserve to be listened to, not lied to and treated with contempt by their managers, who should be taking account of their views, listening to them and representing their view to those higher up.
In regards to the using of bikes for travelling to and from work, majority of those with a company vehi-cles (be it a van or executive car) use it for more than just traveling to and from work and this is even rec-ognised by HM Tax inspectors.”

“@Just_Saying: "Not everything to do with H&S is silly!"
True.... but this bit of nonsense certainly is.
Let's keep our posties fit and healthy by... er... forcing them off their bicycles and stuffing them into motorised transport.
Preserve health by taking away exercise. Raise morale by eliminating sunshine and fresh air. Save money by spending more on petrol. A lobotomised Nanny State run amok!
Brought to a Post Office near you by the very same brain trust that advised the Coalition to
replace Trident to cut the deficit and slash taxes on the rich to help the poor.
@: "One postie, who did not want to be named..."
Now THERE is the only way posties can still preserve their health.”

“fedupposty - I assume those who don't have to carry (many) large packages will be allowed to use bikes still - so depends on routes etc.
If new system is more efficient, it will save money in the long run.”

“Isn't this a bit of a non-story ? Not everything to do with H&S is silly!
"postmen and women are handling more parcels than in the past. They say bikes cannot carry as much and that they are worried about the impact of the increased weights on workers' backs."
- if they carried on as now, how long before posties were injured and claiming compensation ?
"who use Royal Mail bikes to cycle to and from work will now have to buy and use their own bikes, walk..."
- isn't this what most workers do ?
" "high capacity" trolleys to deliver mail. It means workers can carry more mail and bulkier parcels, "
- seems sensible.
Not all change is bad.”
