Last week I travelled to Coleshill to see John White, who is protesting outside the offices of Willmott Dixon, a construction company involved in the development of a new vivisection laboratory for Leicester University.

John is on hunger strike for the duration of his protest. My attention was brought to this action by one of our long-standing members and veteran campaigners for the animal rights movement from whom John had obtained advice, this being his first hunger strike. Speaking to John I was appalled by the level of investment by Leicester University into such projects and after looking at the "Stop the Leicester Animal Lab" website, my eyes were opened to the extent to which animals are routinely being used.

As a Pureland Buddhist such willful neglect of the suffering of fellow sentient beings touches me deeply and I am writing to give voice to my support for John in his campaign and in the hope that the Mercury will help in some way to bring people's attention to this issue.

I am heartened by the commitment and courage of John. After meeting him and some other protesters from the West Midlands Animal Rights group I am also now conscious that there are not an insignificant number of young adults like him who are acting from a similar position of compassion for the benefit of other living beings.

It is my view that such a willingness to put oneself into often risky and challenging situations for such a worthy cause should at least be given some attention, if not recognised in ways that support the important issues pertaining to the welfare of animals that it highlights.

“Karen, there IS stringent policing of testing (for HE Institutions at least) via the Government Home Office under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. I understand this information is publicly available.”

“1. There are several inaccuracies on the "Stop the Leicester Animal Lab" website, for example; there never has, nor is it likely there will ever be research carried out on primates at the University. This must then bring into question the rest of the "information" on their website!
    2. Have you ever used prescription or over the counter medicines? Paracetamol? Antibiotics? If it weren't for the animals, we would not have these and other LIFE SAVING drugs available. Try telling a parent of a child suffering with cancer that use of animals in research should stop.
    3. Animals in laboratories are treated very well in my opinion. There are far more so-called "human beings" out there that own cats/dogs other pets and mistreat them on a daily basis and get away with it. I would suggest if you really care about animals join the RSPCA.

The percieved secrecy about research using animals has gone on long enough, there is nothing to hide! Let's find out the REAL facts before accusations are thrown about please!!”

“It is a very tricky issue. I am appalled by the number of animals used in experiments and anyone with half a brain would abhor cosmetic/domestic cleaning product type tests. However, I have in the past availed myself of medicines and products during surgery which may have been originally tested on animals. I am, however, a member of BUAV and would like to see more stringent policing of testing.”
