Pupils from Leicestershire schools took five of the main awards at a regional science fair.

Children from across the East Midlands took part in the Big Bang Science Fair at Loughborough University.

Redmoor High, Hinckley, Coalville's King Edward VII College and Countesthorpe College each scooped an award, with Welland Park High, Market Harborough, winning two. Projects included improving wind turbine performance, an investigation into chocolate and snake genetics. Redmoor and Welland Park have been asked to take their projects to the National Science and Engineering Fair, in London, next March.

The awards are part of a national scheme to promote maths, science, technology and engineering.
