G A Wright (Mailbox, January 5) tells us that the way halal products are produced is illegal under British law (not stunning the animal at slaughter). What is the opinion of the RSPCA and PDSA? Are they prosecuting halal butchers?

“G A Wright is wrong. There are specific provisions in British law for religious slaughter (in the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations of 1995 if you want to look them up). Halal (and kosher) butchers are not prosecuted because the meat they sell is produced in line with British law.”
