With a reaction from fans almost rivaling that evoked by our local heroes Kasabian when they played their Radio 1 gig here, indie-rockers The Courteeners brought the house down at Leicester’s O2 Academy.

Monday nights, with probably the large majority of the crowd (including me, sadly - I’m writing this with weary eyes as I sit at my desk at too early o’clock) facing the prospect of school/college/work the next day, aren’t usually the best nights for gigs, but it’s no problem for the Manchester band.

With the audience jam-packed into the venue and screaming back almost every single word at frontman Liam Fray right from the start, it could easily have been a very, very busy Saturday. Security guards in front of the stage certainly had their work cut out for them, as crowd-surfers came hurtling in their direction thick and fast.

Songs from their recent album Anna, as well as hits from previous records St Jude and Falcon, filled a boisterous 90-minute set. There were a few tender moments as well, however, with frontman Liam taking to the stage alone for a few solo ballads, showcasing his powerful voice - which is sometimes lost among the roar from the crowd for some of the more raucous numbers. We’re sure he’s not complaining about that, though.

After the show, he tweeted: “Leicester, it has to be said.....That building was shaking. Great scenes.

“Can’t believe that was a Monday night.”

Neither could the rest of us.
