Congratulations to the editor for Mailbox pages that, for once, are not filled with personal rants from the discontented and publicity-seeking regulars.

As is my usual routine, I settled down to read the Mercury and eventually reached the Mailbox pages.

As I read through the articles, I became astounded – astounded being the only applicable word – by the article written by the ever-present Elizabeth Allison (Mailbox, May 27) in which she appears to have taken a partial U-turn in her vegetarianism philosophy, or has finally realised that her ranting is having precious little or, dare I say it, no impact on the meat-eating community.

She actually has written an article that does make sense for once.

Total vegetarianism will never be accepted by the majority, and, as always, it will be the majority who have their way.

Fair or not, that's life, so you may as well accept it!

I then came across a reply to a Labour fanatic from Steve Jones which hit the nail on the head (Mailbox, May 29). Steve's research was accurate.

He could have taken it a little further back in history, though, and given the reason for the Tories being elected at all, which was due, once again, to the Labour Party being unceremoniously booted out by an electorate who had just become sick to the back teeth with Labour and its failing policies and spend, spend/borrow, borrow ways.

No sooner did the Labourites get their idols back into power than the same old cycle began again.

Steve is quite right – Terry Herbert gives the appearance of being nothing other than a malcontent whose idols have been shown the door yet again for their total mismanagement of Government while in office.

He may even get the shock of his life if he gives the new coalition a chance to right the wrongs that had been done to this country by 13 years of consistent and persistent misrule by Labour.

Cristina Watson, Leicester.
