Richard Cockerill hits out after Leicester Tigers' 'unacceptable' show at Exeter
An angry Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill slammed his side's performance in their 19-11 defeat at Exeter Chiefs as "unacceptable".
The visitors conceded 13 points in the last 25 minutes at Sandy Park as the Chiefs overturned an 11-6 deficit to bag a first Aviva Premiership double over their opponents.
Alesana Tuilagi's early try had put Tigers in the driving seat only for Richard Baxter's score and the boot of fly-half Ignacio Mieres to compete the comeback.
Cockerill was bitterly frustrated as his side's unbeaten run in the Aviva Premiership since October 8 came to an end.
"We were in control of the game, then Toby Flood's kick got charged down, they scored and the whole thing turned against us," said Cockerill.
"We didn't look after the ball and we forced the game. We played into their hands and we should have been better than that.
"They work hard, force you into mistakes and punish you. They deserved to win.
"We cannot afford to be as inaccurate as we were. That was rubbish really.
"For whatever reason, we started to chase the game with 20 minutes to go and made mistake after mistake and put ourselves under pressure from which they got penalties.
"We have only ourselves to blame. We will deal with that on Monday morning because I am not accepting that performance. It's not good enough from us."
Tigers' players had an impromptu meeting on the pitch straight after the final whistle with Geordan Murphy and George Chuter addressing the squad as they gathered in a circle.
The defeat meant Tigers blew the chance to leapfrog Northampton Saints into third place, although they do still remain in the play-off places.
"The players have spoken to each other and I have spoken to them now as well," said Cockerill.
"As a group, we are not having that because we are better than that. We should have controlled the game better and we had opportunities to do win it. Instead, we have given them the points.
"That's no disrespect to Exeter and Rob Baxter is a good coach. They are a hard side to beat and, if you get it wrong, they punish you.
"But that was of our own making and we have only ourselves to blame.
"For some reason we tried to force it and made error after error. That killed us. We struggled to gain composure and that is not good enough from those blokes on the field.
"It summed up the night when we (Flood) hit the post with (a penalty) with 10 minutes remaining as we tried to put pressure on them."

“Exeter have made great strides in their two seasons at the big table but you're kidding yourself if you think it'll last without major investment. Have a look at where Bristol are now, it wasn't so long ago that they topped the Premier League table, they're now plying their trade in the Championship and are about to go into the playoffs in an attempt to come back up. Newcastle are another side that highlights the need to build for the future, they won the Premiership after buying themselves a team, they've done nothing of note since and will most likely go down this season as a result, the point being, that there's more to building a successful side than one or two seasons of glory.
I have huge respect for Exeter and think they've done a superb job since coming up, they're a tough, gritty, skillful side who play proper hard-nosed Rugby and i think their style of play actually surprises opponents, it certainly surprised me when i first watched them that's for sure, but playing well only gets you so far and as daft as it sounds, it's not all about the team performance, the rest of it has to be right too in order to go on to do great things.
Sandy Park has a capacity of 11,000 and that's nowhere near enough if the team are going to push on. in your first post you wrote "I foresee top players now realising that Exeter are making their mark and looking at moving down here to join the revolution" but i disagree, the game is professional now and it's hard enough for teams such as Leicester to keep and recruit players of the required caliber with the lure of French money, let alone a small club with a small stadium. Until Exeter increase their capacity to 20,000, enough to host a HC Quarter Final, they'll struggle to bring in established players or "stars" and will have to rely on bringing guys in from local sides or by recruiting from the Championship. Professional players want professional salaries and top professional players want top professional player salaries and if you've only got a capacity of 11,000, you're going to need a very big sponsor who doesn't mind burning money in order to bring in big players.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a poke at Exeter, they pulled our trousers down and gave us a spanking. I thought the first game was simply a result of us missing 21 players, but we only missed a few last week and have no excuses, Tigers simply weren't at the races and that's a huge credit to Exeter who obviously scouted us very well.”

“Cheshire, I am fully aware of what makes a season. I attended my first Tigers match in 1947 and followed the Tigers, with a passion until the end of the 1998-1999 season when i tore up my membership book after watching the 2nd and 3rd team win the first of the four consecutive championships. This was because I realised that if the " kids ", as brilliant as they were, could win the championship, in the absence of the international players. then this indicated just how weak the Premiership was. I also came to realise why the majority of my clubhouse mates left when the club went " professional " and returned to their local clubs. I moved down here in 1984 and for 15 years drove to leicester every second week and never missed a west country/welsh " local " game in order to watch " my team " so I claim to know the history of the club, its strengths and it's weaknesses. My feelings are that there are players now who when they pull on the Tigers jersey think thats it, they have " arrived " and the team has only to run onto the pitch and the win is a foregone conclusion, fully believing their own publicity. Gone are the days when England Captains would ask " but did we win it in style? " after the game in the clubhouse. My post last week was to point out that Exeter, regarded as a second rate side, short on internationals and regarded as a " banker " for 4/5 points, are, in fact, a very progressive club and highly ambitious, well led and highly motivated and, most importantly no pushover. Cocky has every right to be angry at the way the team let itself down and put his job in jeopardy and by the way I am not a supporter of Exeter just an admirer of a club that is intent on being up there in the top four, and are on the way to achieving that ambition in only their second season in the Premiership. regards from Devon”

“Excellent performance by Exeter Chiefs1. This time they defeated a " quality " side to put down those suggestions that they only won last time because all the " stars " were missing. At least the " reserves " gained a losing bonus point!. Tigers were extremely lucky to finish with a full side after the Julian White " stamping " why the Ref didn't send him packing is a mystery. I foresee top players now realising that Exeter are making their mark and looking at moving down here to join the revolution. At the same time Tigers need to recruit or give their upcoming " stars " a chance to raise the standards again 'cos the present team have lost the plot!. Further, and I have to say it, to those would could see no further than a Tigers win you should have gone to Specsavers!!. regards from Devon”

“So much for the warning shot across the bows of the top 2 that Chuter fired on Thursday. On that performance we'll be lucky to make the top 4.
There are no excuses, we had a good side out. I'm not looking forward to Saricens next week. They've got many more missing than us but can still play away and win.
I like Richard, he's been an amazing servant to the club, but come back Pat! (Cricket's a boring sport anyway).”
