A 16-mile charity run will raise cash for charity in memory of a stillborn baby.

Pete and Fay Davies were heartbroken when their first child, Harrison, died before he was born.

The couple, from Scalford, near Melton, said there were no health problems with either Fay, or Harrison during the pregnancy, and that his death remains a mystery.

Pete and Fay received support from the stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands after Harrison's death in December 2008, and since then have been raising cash for the charity.

Now, their friend, Richard Gunn, is to run from Leicester City's Walkers Stadium to the Asfordby Amateurs Ladies and Girls' Football Club for Sands.

Pete is chairman of the Asfordby club, and Richard, 49, from Syston, is the coach and manager of the under-14s team.

Pete and Fay, who celebrated the birth of their daughter, Elsie, two weeks ago, have thanked Richard for his support.

"What Richard is doing for Harrison is amazing," said Pete.

"The money he raises will help support families who have been through the nightmare that we did with Harrison, as well as research the reasons why it can happen.

"In our case, Fay had a fine pregnancy. The birth was about 12 days overdue. We went into St Mary's Hospital, in Melton, because we thought she was having labour pains, and then we were transferred to Nottingham.

"He was due to be induced but he was stillborn. We still have no explanation as to why it happened. It was just one of those awful things.

"Of course, now we have Elsie and she is wonderful, but you never get over the feelings of losing a child."

Richard, a fire safety officer at Loughborough University, will do the run on Saturday.

He said: "Pete and Fay are fantastic people who threw themselves into supporting the club after little Harrison died.

"They were really affected by it but have tried to bring positive things out of their experience. I just want to help by doing this run and raising a bit of money."

Richard will be joined by players from the club riding bicycles, and possibly some other runners, along the route.

He will run along Melton Road, in Leicester, through Thurmaston, Syston, East Goscote, Rearsby, Thrussington, Brooksby, Hoby and finish at Asfordby Sports Ground, in Hoby Road. So far, more than £300 has been raised.

The club is planning further events for Sands, including a six-a-side football tournament on Saturday, June 26, involving 30 teams who have paid £5 each.

There will also be an auction of football gear donated by Premiership and football league clubs. To sponsor Richard visit:
