Ritual killing of animals wrong
I appreciate the fact that Elizabeth Allison cares deeply about animal welfare and I totally agree with her views on cloned animals as she expressed them.
I think this practice is neither needed nor acceptable and is just a little game for scientists to play at.
But what does amaze me is that not once in her many letters have I read of her disgust at the killing of animals without stunning on religious grounds.
Each year millions of animals are killed in Britain by this method.
In Harrow, north west London from next month 10 secondary schools will have to dine on animals that were bled to death in accordance with Islamic teaching.
As far as I am aware it is illegal to kill animals without stunning in this country. Our law states that we must not discriminate against anyone on colour or religious grounds. So why do they discriminate against our laws whenever or for whatever reason they think fit.
We have never had a Government with the guts to say: "You either obey our laws or pack your bags." I'm sure these people would show us and our country much more respect if we did.

“This "ritual" slaughter is barbaric and should be banned. Many people are ignorant to the fact that they may be eating this meat as many outlets will either not advertise the fact or only display in arabic that they are a halal outlet. When visiting a take away/resturant etc I always make a point of asking how their meat is slaughtered. If it's halal then it's harram for me and I leave in disgust.I believe that the KFC's in Leicester are now halal.Shame on them!”

“Once more that ghastly word 'culture' allows cruel practices and methods to lurk behind it. Good to hear on the news today that Domino's Pizza has decided against all meat products being produced via the Halal method. The more information available the more people will realise what is going on.. Trouble is the 'politically correct' find themselves in a quandary, they hate animal cruelty but they also want to support a multi faith society..oo-er what a tizzy.”

“Here's a statement from Harrow Council
You will notice that at the schools where Halal meat has been on the menue they generously offer a choice of Halal Meat or Fish or vegitables (That's the type of free choice Stalin would have been proud of)
They also state that there had been no complaints in the two years at the schools where Halal meat was the only meat option but fail to say how widely if at all it was known about
"It said media reports that it was insisting on schools only serving halal meat were untrue, but the catering situation in schools will be reviewed in the autumn.
A furore has kicked up since it was revealed the council has engaged with catering company Harrison¿s to offer primary school meals where only halal meat is available.
The council said today that the menus also include fish and vegetarian options, and said it was the school¿s choice whether it opted into the scheme.
In a statement, it said: ¿The use of halal meat is common practice across London in many schools, public organisations and indeed restaurants, because of the need to provide segregated meat preparation.
¿However, there is a choice of menu every day and frequently there is a fish, as well as a vegetarian choice.
¿The catering provider concerned has been providing schools meals in nine Harrow high schools for the past two years including halal meat.
¿This contract was procured by the schools and has been very successful.¿
Meat designated halal comes from animals killed by a slit to the throat and it is the only meat acceptable to some Muslims. However, the method is seen as cruel by others.
Harrow Council said it had received no complaints from pupils or parents during the last two years at the secondary schools where only halal meat is served.
Councillor Brian Gate, in charge of schools and colleges, said no decision had been made over primary school food provision and the council would work with schools in the autumn to ¿make the best decision for their pupils¿.
He said: ¿We consulted with primary schools about the provision of hot meals to their schools but the decision about whether to use an individual provider is for schools to make, as the funding is delegated to them.
¿At present we are not proceeding to roll this programme out more widely but this is because of the cost constraints and the level of interest from parents.
¿We are aware that some faith groups don¿t eat Halal meat and we will be reviewing the position with schools in the autumn.¿
Anyone with a question about halal meat meals at Harrow schools can email school.meals@harrow.gov.uk.”

“Andrew,
Personally I don't read the Daily Mail, but you do realise that you are commenting on a paper which is part of the same group, don't you?
Yes it does people good to research their own data but just to say, he's wrong, he's wrong, he's wrong etc without even a slight bit of an explanation is a nugatory post.”

“It does people good to find out facts for themselves, rather than relying on things they read in the Daily Mail. Everyone reading this has access to the web, and there is plenty of accurate information available online which comprehensively squashes G A Wright's confident assertions. The laws relating to animal slaughter are all online, for example, as is Harrow council's response to the lies being told about halal meat.”

“G A Wright is wrong about the law on animal slaughter, wrong about the reasons for cloning animals, and also wrong about Harrow schools. Quite impressive for just one letter.”
