But after a skate-off against skier Chemmy Alcott on Sunday night, she was the sixth celebrity to be eliminated by the judges.
She said: "It has been the most beautiful adventure.
"It was bound to happen at some point, I know that. I think the time is right. I would have hated to have left under a humiliating cloud.
"I felt the other competitors were raising the bar so high and the gap between us was getting greater and greater.
"No-one of advanced years has ever gone this far and that's a record I can hold, which is lovely.
"I've shown that if you're able to keep your weight down you can achieve an amazing amount at my age and I hope that inspires other people."
Rosemary, of Ashby Folville, near Melton, said that as well as being the most successful older contestant on the show she had been the most excited.
She said: "It's changed my life. It's been brilliant. Everyone has been amazing and that's the thing I'm going to miss most."
On Sunday night's Valentine's special, she and her professional partner, Mark Hanretty, skated to I'll Stand By You, by the Pretenders.
As in the previous week, the judges enjoyed the performance but felt her progression as a skater was beginning to peak while the younger skaters were doing ever more impressive moves.
Her overall score was 15.5 out of 30.
Head judge Robin Cousins said: "It's coming in the right direction but you were still 100 per cent manipulated by your partner.
"It's as lovely and as elegant as it has ever been but you're also going to run the risk of every routine looking exactly the same."
Louie Spence said the performance lacked "power" and "pizzaz", while Rosemary's biggest fan on the panel, Katarina Witt, said: "I think you're at your potential".
All three judges decided to save skier Chemmy in the final skate-off.
The other drama of Sunday's show was when former Brookside actress Jennifer Ellison suffered a nasty gash after kicking herself in the head.
The 28-year-old needed medical treatment after the accident, which happened while performing a "scorpion" move, throwing her head back while lifting one of her skates up a little bit too high.
Rosemary said she was looking forward to going away to her holiday home, in Portugal, and spending more time with her husband.
