Rutland to host major U18 sports event
Open to young people aged 5-18 years, of all abilities and backgrounds in every school in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, the School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. It is also a key Government priority for realising a meaningful legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Portfolio Holder for Youth and Sports, Councilor Gene Plews said:
"Having secured the position as host, Rutland will be able to showcase its excellent sports facilities, not to mention the wealth of young talent that we have in the county. Major events like this in the past have been held at venues such as Loughborough University and Leicester Grammar School, which shows just how big this event is. We are really proud to be hosting this year's School Games Summer Championships event and I hope that this inspires more young people in the county to get involved with sport this year."

Matt Hampson has just been announced as one of four sports stars appointed as Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games ambassadors for the 2012/13 academic year, he said:
"I am delighted to be acting as a School Games Ambassador for 2013; The Matt Hampson Foundation is about inspiring and supporting young people in sport and the School Games provides young people with the opportunity to be inspired to take part in more competitive school sport. I look forward to meeting some of the athletes at the Championship events."
Previously Rutland has won gold medals in a variety of events including gymnastics and hockey, and hopes to continue this standard on home soil this year.
The games expect to see up to 1,000 competitors, along with team managers, volunteers, support staff and parents, which will not only provide a great audience for the games, but will also help to boost tourism in the county. Visit Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sports website for more information.
Great news for the county!
