“posting fail.... but anyway before my comment went into hyperspace and messed up....
what I find annoying is the roads are clear, people can get to work, most of the rat bag kids can get to work and many schools are closed because no one can be bothered to go to work at the school. Meanwhile, good people like myself among others wake up at stupid o'clock in the morning to go to work.
Oh and by the way... I CYCLE to work rain or shine. some people are real whimps these days....”

“This debate seems to have drifted considerably off the point since I posted at lunchtime. Whatever the merits (or otherwise) of the various arguments over teachers, the original debate was based on the simple question: when all the main roads were clear, with most employees managing to get to work, shops and factories working normally, and with a whole weekend to take whatever precautionery measures necessary, WHY did hundreds of schools apparently wake up this morning so unprepared to find snow on the ground that they had no option but to close?
From what I've read in these posts so far, there seems to be a singular lack of honesty and a great deal of self-delusion on the part of many people. So let's cut the **** and get down to the brutally honest truth. Ever since the first snowfall a week ago, thousands of you, school staff and parents alike, have been praying for a half-decent excuse to take a day or two off. Some of you feel almost cheated if a mild winter denies you the opportunity to grab an unofficial mid-winter break, to the point that you even phone the school when a heavy frost lies on the ground in the wistful hope that you wish will be granted.
Let's face the facts. You all had two whole days to dig your cars out of the snow, or to make whatever alternative arrangements were necessary to get your kids to school on Monday morning, but many of you decided to gamble instead on your school being closed. Some of you won that gamble, but pity those few poor parents who awoke this morning to find, to their dismay, that their school actually had the effrontery to remain open while all around were closed. Some of you were grateful, some of you complained bitterly, but many of you decided to brazen it out and keep your children at home, despite the fact that your teachers came in from as far afield as Nottingham while you couldn't even manage half a mile! So how are you going to explain to the school why your kids found it impossible to get into school today, when other kids from your street came in on time? Interesting, eh?”

“I was at school during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I can not recall school ever being closed, for any reason. Did it not snow or were we all made of sterner stuff back then.
The greatest fun in those days was to pour water onto the snow so that it froze overnight to make a slide. Perish the thought, nowadays there would be a raft of EU regulations and threat of lawsuits to spoil the fun.”

“Tony, while you there can you ask him for more money for school facilities, a return to the university based education system, the scrapping of the planned O levels and less focus on paperwork within classrooms so teachers can actually teach when we are in the classroom.
Something tells me he wont do anything...”

“It's interesting that the posts on here supporting teachers are the ones that get negative reviews. I am a teacher and I was in today because the school was open. I made sure that I left early in order to get into school. If the school had been closed it would not have been through any decision of mine.
I also agree with the comment raised by KJannoyed. As a teacher I am sick of the abuse given out to teachers as being lazy and unwilling with work. Had I been off today I imagine that I would have done the marking and planning I am doing now. I obviously understand people are frustrated because of the knock on effect of teachers 'having a day off'. If schools were open and teachers were not in then the teachers will not be paid. So do not fret!”

“@ Periodical it isn't the teachers who closed the school it is down to the headteacher who has the final say. Teachers might want to or not want to come to work like other people but they can't close a school unless loads of them are unable to come to the school. X”
