Parents and carers of year six children – those born between September 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002 – that live in the city should receive a copy of Leicester City Council's "Transfer to Secondary School Information Pack" in the next few days.

The packs provide advice on how to apply for a secondary school place and include other information on key dates, catchment areas and an explanation of how school places are allocated.

Councillor Vi Dempster, assistant city mayor for children, young people and schools, said: "The transfer to secondary school is a huge step for parents and children.

"We want to do everything we can to make sure the application process goes smoothly and I would urge all parents to read the information provided carefully and to ensure that they submit their completed applications in good time.

"I am very proud that last year we were able to offer about 98 per cent of parents a place at one of their preferred schools."

The closing date for applications for secondary school transfer is Wednesday October 31.
