Self-sacrifice
Paul Coleman says there are a lot of comments in Mailbox on the subjects of food and religion ("Why we should live and let live", Mailbox, February 6).
Shortly there is an opportunity to combine these two subjects.
As the season of Lent approaches, beginning on Ash Wednesday this week, it is customary for Christians to give something up in recognition of Christ's 40-day fast in the wilderness.
Popular substances from which people abstain are various confectioneries and alcohol.
In an Anglican newspaper I recently read: "Traditionally Lent was a time when whole communities gave up dairy and animal produce, and gave the money they saved to the poor".
What an appropriate way to emulate Christ's infinite self-sacrifice and compassion.
Elizabeth Allison, Aylestone.

“Hmm. I think I'll give up paying the slightest attention to any religious cretin trying to tell me how to live my life. I may even keep it going after Easter too.”

“So what Elizabeth Allison is saying, let's not live and let live.
I wonder if she will be giving up her leather shoes, handbags, car seats, sofas etc for Lent, should she have them?”
