Sensitive, serene and graceful
Within the first few waves of Han-na Changs's baton, I realised this was going to be a superb evening.
Without a manuscript, she demonstrated an intimate knowledge of the music with passion, sensitivity, serenity and grace. One was almost mesmerised by her conducting alone.
Having achieved many great things already in her 29 years, she is certain to attain much more.
Manuel de Falla's Suites Nos. 1 and 2 are a set of dances based on the relationship between a magistrate and a miller's wife. The varying moods were excellently captured by the orchestra. A beautiful woodwind solo, string plucking and horn solo passages told of the quieter moments in the affair.
Joaquin Rodrigo's Concerto for Guitar and orchestra followed, and was wonderfully relaxing.
Allegro con spirito utilised lively Spanish folk rhythms with the slow section consisting of a conversation between guitar and cor anglais harking back to the baroque era.
The final movement, Allegro gentile, was quick in tempo but not loud, with an ending of short, quick notes.
Barber's Adagio for strings was perfect; a listener could easily be consumed by the intensity and deeply moving nature of the piece that permeated the air. The evening ended with Gershwin's famous work, An American in Paris.
Lively and energetic, it is constructed in free style to enable the listener to interpret it in any way they desire. Wonderful.
