Shoppers chase thief after smash and grab raid at Lumbers jewellers in Market Street, Leicester
Members of the public gave chase after a thief on a bike smashed a jeweller's window and snatched two watches worth £16,000.
The incident happened at about midday on Saturday in Market Street when a man on a bicycle made a daring smash and grab attempt at Lumbers jewellers.
The thief pocketed two Breitling watches and rode off as members of the public tried to grab him.
An off-duty police officer, who was near the store at the time, called in the crime and police arrived a short time later.
However, they were unable to find the suspect.
Store director Michelle Dilley said: "I want to say a big thank-you to the off-duty officer who knew what to do.
"We were all in a state of shock and went into auto-pilot, but he kept us calm and called the police.
"It just goes to show you that the police are never really off duty."
