Shot Malala is an inspiration
A group of armed men board a bus full of schoolchildren and, having identified the child they are looking for, one of the men deliberately shoots her, at close range, in the face. Can we even begin to fathom the kind of madness and depravity that gives rise to such an act? Perhaps we shouldn't be attempting to. Perhaps what we should be doing instead is to listen to the people whose lives are being blighted by it every day – and fewer voices have been as affecting as Malala Yousafzai's.
That she is now lying in a Birmingham hospital after having been almost killed is shameful. That her condition is improving is a blessing. We should all admire her and I join with the writer of the letter in Thursday's Mercury in wishing her a full and speedy recovery.

“A few days ago a comment on twitter succinctly summed up the difference (some sections of) mankind had made between technological and theological progress; it said:
"Dear Religion, This week I safely dropped a man from space while you shot a child in the head for wanting to go to school. Yours, Science"...
When within a matter of days we can achieve such an astounding feat yet offset it with a deplorable inhuman act , you do have to wonder where it will all end. I wish Malala a full recovery too.”
