Welby farm shooting: Two burglars jailed at Leicester Crown Court
Two burglars shot by a homeowner who was later arrested have both been jailed for four years.
Joshua O'Gorman and Daniel Mansell, who have a string of previous convictions between them, pleaded guilty to the break-in at the home of Andy Ferrie in Welby, near Melton, in the early hours of September 2.
Mansell (33) of Harrowden Rise, Crown Hills, Leicester, and O'Gorman (27) The Wayne Way, Crown Hills, Leicester, were injured during the confrontation in the remote cottage.
Mr Ferrie, 35, and his wife Tracey, 43, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after he called police to tell them he had fired his shotgun at the intruders.

The couple were later bailed and told they would not face criminal charges.
The burglars were today jailed at Leicester Crown Court.
Sentencing the pair, Judge Michael Pert QC told them the injuries they suffered when Mr Ferrie opened fire – O'Gorman was shot in the face and Mansell was hit in his right hand – were not included, in his opinion, as part of their sentence or defence.
Prosecutor Alan Murphy told the court that Mansell was released from prison in May last year after serving part of a six-year sentence for wounding with intent. In total, his criminal record consisted of eight previous convictions involving 19 offences. O'Gorman had 16 previous convictions involving 27 offences, many for dishonesty and driving offences.

“Interesting Point from Vikingfox - My Nephew is the same - I felt the same about him.
I once spent ages getting him a Job - took a day off work, spoke to his probation officer, opened a bank account, as he promised me he'd try. I did it for his Mum, as she was the one who suffered his endless excuses and promises. He got fired withing 3 weeks, his mum said, it's because he has a criminal record. I told her categorically, I hate to burst your bubble, but I got him the job, and they knew he had a record. I went to the Employer and asked why, apparently he turned up late if at all, gobbed off to his foreman, and nicked some fags out of someones coat.
These 2 should have got 8 years and served a minimum of 4. Not 4 (which probably does mean 2)
I don't think the "Risk you take" speech will serve as any kind of warning, or that they'll pick safer houses to rob. I think Burglars will change the stakes and go equipped, meaning that victims who are at home will probably be met with violence more often now.
It's good that the guy and his wife were not charged in a way, but it's a very dangerous precedent to set in another.”

“So Rajjan in the space of one minute you change your firm conviction from shooting them to doing something else. Glad in a way because I wonder what punishment you would suggest for murderers”

“It would appear that sansue and myself are receiving special attention, its flattering it really is. You do have the option of putting your views forward in the form of what i like to call an opinion but that red arrow is less taxing on the old grey cells.
Much love :)”

“All I can say is that one of the above is family of mine and he also has 7 kids and 1 grandchild. The courts have been far too lenient considering his past, he has been nothing but scum since he was a kid. Selling drugs, muggings and now this? Lock them up and throw away the key...and I'm family that's saying this!”

“"At long last common sense has prevailed and justice has been served to these 2 scum bags, I just hope that this case sets a precedence for home owners to be able protect themselves, and use whatever means necessary against intruders, without the fear of prosecution!!!"
What on earth are you on about? The precedence has been set many times and the law is very clear on the force you can use to defend yourself in your own home. Its a myth that the law doesn't allow you to do so, and there are many cases to show this. What you CAN'T do is dish out your own justice, as in the case where members of a family chased an intruder down the road and beat him!! They, quite rightly, went to prison.”

“Prison is no deterent. Prosoners get treated better than most care home residents.”
