“I'm not surprised at the low turnout - there's already been excuses discussed on the radio about poor promotion, cold dark night for voting, etc; can't they see that the majority of the electorate just didn't see the introduction of PCC's as necessary?

David Cameron touted the role as 'introducing democracy' into the Police - what claptrap, it's all about introducing politics into the Police (as if there weren't enough already, ask any senior policeman). As others have said a non-job and complete waste of money, to implement another level of complexity into the chain of strategic and operational control of the constabulary.

And how effective will the role be? - well that depends on the Treasury and the Home Office, who will still ultimately call the shots...”

“The fact is these elections were far too politicised and that's why the turnout was so low.

64K plus votes from an electorate of this size is not a barnstorming victory.

And he couldn't even say whether he was a member of the Freemasons or not!!”

“There is this widespread myth, which has subsisted almost for all time, that ex-servicemen, and ex-officer class servicemen in particular, are very well suited to carry out important jobs in the public sector. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Service men work in a vacuum utterly divorced from the real world and over decorated, always entirely arrogant army, navy or air force officers are absolutely the last people who should be doing a job of this type.

I speak as one who has frequently worked with ex-officer service men in various capacities - mostly army and air force - and who has a ex-naval officer in his family.

I also believe that bringing party politics into this role is wholly wrong although, as I have written here before, everyone, well nearly everyone, tends to act and work and make decisions in a way that is politically biased to some extent. But it is rather depressing to see the winner sporting a rosette.”

“A professional person with no experience of policing - military experience is irrelevant and subject to different rules.

"Earns" more than the City Mayor but even less accountable. And with fewer votes as a percentage.

In a role that politicises the police: and we know successful that has been in the USA!!!!”

    “Waht are we to do?

A qualified, experienced and professional person elected into a position of responsiblity!

Somehow I don't expect to see Sir Clive following Sir Petes lead.................

No pictures in the LM of an unshaven Sir Clive looking happy
No pictures in the LM of an unshaven Sir Clive looking sad
No pictures in the LM of an unshaven Sir Clive looking earnest
No pictures in the LM of an unshaven Sir Clive looking well - unshaven.

What we will get is lots of Sir Clive just getting on with job at hand ( without Deputies and Assistants).

I wonder if it will catch on?”

“I didn't want a party political candidate to win this election because I feel passionately that the police should be independent of party politics, but, nonetheless, I expected Sir Clive to win and I did give him my second choice vote because I think he is probably the best candidate and if he had stood as an independent he would have had my first choice vote.

I just hope now that he is left by the Conservative party to do his job without their interference.”

Bob491 is very quiet tonight. Perhaps he's too busy celebrating the Corby win with my local MP (looks like she was too busy to help Leicesters Labour PCC win).”

“Congratulations to Sir Clive and to BOB491....in your face Bob, in your face.
I can't wait for Sir Clive to start privatising the police and taking home £75,000 per year. At least Sarah Russell will still have time to carry on knitting.”
