Snooker: Mark Selby in Shanghai suprise
Mark Selby suffered a disastrous start to the new season when he crashed out of the Roewe Shanghai Masters in the first round.
The 'Jester from Leicester' lost 5-3 to world No.21 Stuart Bingham at the Grand Stage.
Basildon's Bingham won the first two frames before world No.7 Selby hit back to draw level at the interval.
But breaks of 110 and 48 saw Bingham open up a two-frame lead, leaving Selby needing to win the final three frames to advance to the second round.
Selby, a Shanghai semi-finalist last year, did win the seventh, with runs of 39 and 60, to close the gap, but Bingham fired in a break of 41 to seal a surprise victory.
"I played okay. Mark is a good player but I came here with a bit of confidence," said Bingham.
The first of only six ranking tournaments this season, Selby will be bitterly disappointed not to have had a better start as he bids to make up for the previous campaign, when he failed to build on his Masters and Welsh Open titles.
He had also enjoyed a prolonged stay in China due to promotional commitments, which should have given him an advantage over the rest of his rivals as they only had a couple of days to acclimatise to the humid conditions.
