Snow and a car crash conspired to jam up city and county roads this morning.

At about 8am a car travelling out of the underpass at St Nicholas Circle ended up on its side in a crash involving one other car.

The vehicle blocked one lane of the inner ring road, causing serious tailbacks on the northbound side.

Elsewhere, the snowfall meant many more people using main routes instead of backroads, leading to slow traffic into the city from many directions.

An area traffic control spokeswoman said: “There was one lane blocked near to the Southgates underpass following a collision at 8am and there was also heavy traffic being caused due to the snow.”

The car on its side was removed at 9.30am and the road fully re-opened.

The fire service said there had been several other minor road crashes overnight in the snow.

“its all down to driver skill and driving according to road and weather conditions, a couple of years ago on the 18th of December I set out at 3am it was -5 degrees and it was the day the country was grid locked and most airports shut, I rode my BMW R1200 GS Adventure 975 miles to the south of France for the first 770 miles to Lyon it was snowing, drifting snow or snow on the ground , it was a difficult journey, I never dropped my bike or lost control and arrived at my mates house on my motorcycle the following day :)”

“How do you know for certain it would have ended on it's side? Certainly an accident would have happened of course. But without the forensic information needed you are just guessing. Always an expert in a chair”

“this car would have ended up on its side regardless of weather. its driver has not the level of skill required to drive.”

“Loughborough Road looked bad and the bus I was on seemed to have problems getting enough grip at times. I was thinking it hadn't been gritted properly, if at all.”

“Grit or no grit it all comes down to how well you can handle your car...I have to commuted 30 miles each day and the snow today was minor.”

“Surely if the roads are treacherous doesn't that mean you drive according to the conditions? I appreciate gritters should have heard the forecast and acted appropriately but you as a driver have a responsibility as well.”

“Maybe there is no money for grit as Soulsby is splashing the cash about on Jubilee square, Bus Stations and stuff like that.”

“The roads were gritted but the salt only works once enough traffic has crushed it into the tarmac. Most of these accidents are caused by careless driving including speeding. If you can't control your vehicle you shouldn't be on the roads.”
