Leicester City have been linked with a move for defender Danny Shittu.

The 30-year-old Nigerian international is a free agent after being released by Bolton on Wednesday and City are said to be interested in him to bolster their central defensive options.

City boss Paulo Sousa failed to bring in a centre back on transfer-deadline day after a bid for Swansea City's Ashley Williams was rejected. He then ran out of time negotiating a deal for Hull City's Kamil Zayatte.

City are lining up a loan move for Zayatte when the loan window opens on Wednesday, possibly with a view to a permanent deal, but 6ft 3in Shittu's availability may tempt Sousa, who wants to add a defender with a physical presence.

Shittu started his career in England at Charlton Athletic in 1999 but failed to make an appearance. After loan spells at Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers, he joined QPR on a permanent basis in 2002.

He spent four years at Loftus Road and made 162 appearances before joining Watford in 2006 for £1.6 million.

Watford were relegated from the Premier League at the end of that season but Shittu was named in the Championship team of the year the following campaign.

He signed a three-year contract with Bolton in 2008, the fee being £2 million.

He made only 10 appearances in his first season and did not feature at all during the last campaign, and his contract was cancelled on September 1.

Celtic are also said to be interested in Shittu, who has been capped 28 times by Nigeria.

“I remember the theory I had about Stearman the year we went down was that he was so fed up with how ineffective we were in front of goal that he felt that he was better off doing it himself!

I accept that he did tend to go missing then, stranded upfield as the other team broke, but I don¿t think that he had been as reckless before that. There must have been a reason for that, and his frustration at what was going on around him remains favourite to me.

Stearman¿s experience with Wolves won¿t have done him any harm ¿ at least you get to play two more games against the better teams if you don¿t join one of them ¿ and he is capable of chipping in with the occasional goal. Apart from Berner, we are currently lacking in defenders who can score, particularly with Morrison being out of favour. As to Hobbs, it remains a mystery to me why someone with his physical attributes cannot score a goal from a set piece now and again.”

“Stearman was continually exposed on the right side the year we went down.

City have not had a holding midfielder for years now we have two capable of plugging the gaps in front of the back 4.

Stearman has size and 30 months experience with a Premiership team (allbeit Wolves!)

He can also come up with goals at set pieces. Apart from Morrison, Hobbs doesnt look exactly deadly in front of goal.

It adds to our height at set pieces especially if Howard fails to keep a regular starting place now Waggy has arrived”

“Stearman, Stearman!! Don't make me laugh.
Watch some video's from when we went down with a wimper and you'll see Stearman being roasted at right back time and time again!
His best moments were always at the other end!
    No thanks!”

“Shittu is a capable and proven player at Championship level but has twice failed in the Premiership. His game is all about having a physical presence and, whilst he would undoubtedly improve us defensively in the air, I agree that he would not add a great deal to our passing game.

I don¿t think that he would necessarily be a bad signing but it would certainly confuse me as to in which direction Sousa is trying to take the team. If he was close to signing Zayette on loan before the transfer window closed, then that still has to be the most likely signing with loan deals becoming possible again shortly.

As to the question of whether we actually need another centre back, you¿d have to think that it doesn¿t bode well for Tunchev¿s return any time soon if we do. We could do with another update on that one. I personally don¿t think that Parkes is ready for the first-team yet, as he¿s still undisciplined positionally, so that leaves us with 4 who can play there ¿ Hobbs, Morrision, Moreno and Vitor ¿ one of whom is currently injured. All it would take is for another one of those to be injured or suspended, and there wouldn¿t be enough experienced cover on the bench. So I guess you can understand Sousa¿s thinking.

I like the thought of Stearman coming back to us. He was a strong, consistent and versatile lad, and I¿d be surprised if there were many City fans who would still begrudge him having left us when he did. Unfortunately, I think he¿ll probably stay where he is, with the chance of playing Premiership football.”
