Music students in Leicester are to receive master classes and one-to-one tuition from world-renowned musicians.

The University of Leicester has announced a partnership with the Philharmonia Orchestra to nurture the next generation of musical talent.

Musicians will visit the university in the run-up to concerts.

Lucinda Brown, 18, has a music scholarship and plays cello in the university orchestra.

Lucinda, from Birmingham, said: "It's brilliant. The opportunity to work with someone who has experience at such a high level is amazing.

"I've been in orchestras since I was nine and I hope the one-to-one tuition will give me an insight into how experienced players handle scores.

"Hopefully, I'll learn some new techniques."

Raqib Huq, 20, president of the university orchestra, said: "I must admit I was surprised to hear we would be tutored by members of the Philharmonia.

"I still can't believe it – they are some of the best players in the country, if not the world.

"I've no doubt they will be able to help us with our music."

The link was the idea of university vice-chancellor Professor Robert Burgess and assistant registrar Jo Wood.

Prof Burgess said: "It is a real achievement to become the first university to develop a major link with a first-rate national orchestra.

"This partnership embraces the Philharmonia's ethos that musical excellence should be available to all, both as consumers – as audience members – and as active participants.

It also mirrors the University of Leicester's ambition to enhance and develop the student-led music activities on campus."

The university has a variety of musical groups, including the orchestra, chamber choir, big band and choral society.

Places in any of the musical ensembles are open to all students.

David Whelton, managing director of the Philharmonia, said: "It's enormously important for us to ensure everyone has access to the finest-quality music experience, both as audience members and performers.

"The University of Leicester has a vibrant music scene, hosting a number of orchestras and ensembles.

"It is a great opportunity for Philharmonia players, many of whom are professors at leading conservatoires, to share their knowledge and passion in a series of rehearsals and lessons.

"We hope this partnership will inspire students and ensure that the musical life at the university continues to go from strength to strength."
