Stop this cruelty to farm animals
Animal Aid's undercover investigation into UK slaughterhouses found cruelty and law-breaking on a massive scale, including a sow screaming in agony from the electric shock that failed to stun her.
Animal Aid is now campaigning for slaughterhouses to be fitted with CCTV cameras to make them obey the law. The organisation is asking all supermarket chains to ensure that all their meat suppliers install CCTV.
Of course, this won't end the suffering of farmed animals but CCTV will help to prevent some shocking illegal cruelty.
There are two things Mercury readers can do to help. Call Animal Aid on 01732 364546 to request postcards addressed to supermarket chains which have not yet agreed to insist on CCTV. And don't eat meat or at least reduce meat consumption. It is so easy to buy meat-free foods today. The least we can do is help to stop the inhumane treatment of farmed animals.
Mrs Elizabeth Allison, Aylestone.

“I wonder how many letters have been received to LM from 'DB' of Leicester and 'David' of Great Eastern?
Elizabeth Alison write intelligent comment an dpeople can choose whether respond or not.
Much better that someone points out significant issues like tis.
The treatment of these animals is appalling just so that people can stuff themselves with meat.
I thought we had come a long way in the 21st century with our attitudes to other beings/species but there are still dinosaurs out there!!”

“One letter a week for the past 4 years. I think we have seen enough. Its time the LP gave column space to more deserving readers.”

“The argument is valid, but the repetition & preaching telling people not to eat meat just goes on and on......and on and on and on...... I said in my first comment "Animals are farmed for their meat, granted best practice should be maintained but, "And don't eat meat or at least reduce meat consumption. It is so easy to buy meat-free foods today." Let me choose my lifestyle please"”

“You DO have the choice NOT to read letters - these animals have no choice
The first letter brought up by the LM search engine has a date of Friday, September 19, 2008 - so approx 1 per week rather than '20 letters a day'
Just because its an 'old story' it doesn't make the arguments any less valid.”

“QUOTE.."Can anyone tell me why E. A. gets so many letters published in the L.M.?"
I have looked at the LM web site and there appears to be around 160 letters to the LM from Elizabeth. I thinks its time to move on LM, this is getting stupid.”

“Here she goes again wanting everyone else to do what she does. Well, Ms.Allison the world doesn't work like that and I for one am getting sick and tired of you telling me and the rest of us what we should be doing.
Why do you continually go on in your belligerent fashion telling everyone else what to do and what is best for them?
Why is your way best?!!
Personally, I don't like the amount of crime that goes on, the drug and alcohol abuse, the mugging of old folk and, above all, folk who wish to foist their ideological view on the rest of us.
Hopefully, with the holiday season upon us we shall hear less of her - I should be so lucky!!”

“I admire Elizabeth's persistance in bring these matters to peoples attention.
I eat meat but hate animal cruelty. I buy outdoor reared animals and from sources that slaughter humanely. I mostly don't eat meat 'out' as I do not know how it was kept & killed.
That is my choice.
Everyone has the right to make their own choice BUT there is no need for animals to be cruely treated.”

Let me choose my lifestyle please, don't tell me what to do, your as bad as all the christians writing on here.”
