A delegation from Leicester is to meet leading politicians in New Delhi to convey their dismay at the brutal gang rape and death of a 23-year-old medical student.

It will be led by the general secretary of the Leicestershire branch of the Indian Workers Association Sital Singh Gill.

A condolence meeting was held on Friday to pay homage to the memory of the victim, who died in hospital on December 29, two weeks after being attacked on a bus in New Delhi. Mr Gill said: "We want to convey our deep concerns from the people of Leicester to the leaders of India's political parties."

Mr Gill, who represents 3,600 members of the association, said: "This brutal and shameful incident has shocked and galvanised the whole country."

“In 1984 after the death of Indira Gandhi, thousands of Sikhs were killed by Indian Government sponsored carnage and hundreds of Sikh girls were raped and murdered. Indian Government set up 10 commissions and every commission gathered evidence and recommended to prosecute number of politicians and police officers and members of gangs who committed atrocities, but Government not only destroyed the evidence gathered by the commission but they refused to accept the finding of these commissions. Up to now no one has been properly prosecuted.
If the Indian Government and the Media (Who even refused to report these atrocities) had campaigned, I am sure this and thousands of other rapes could been avoided.
I don't remember the so called IWA condemning the atrocities i.e. rapes and murder of 1984??
Secondly I am surprised by the number of member IWA claim to have, as far as I know Mr Gill is just one man show always seeking publicity?
While I condemn the rape of this woman and thousands other who are raped every day in India, I hope that IWA and other self appointed leaders will ask for justice for the victims irrespective of their religion and nationality.

“Are we still sending millions of pounds in foreign aid to India? If so, surely this gives the British Government some authority to strongly advise India on how they should deal with these rapists? If we no longer send any aid, then quite frankly, I can't see why we're getting involved. Horrendous crimes like this are happening every day, all over the world but the people are Leicester aren't rushing off all over the world every day to express their condolences!!!!”

“I think it is comendable that one country shows concern to another and I would think it was up to the members of the Indian Workers association how their contributions are spent. As long as its not coming out of rate payers' money then what concern is it of anyone else?”

“Quote: We want to convey our deep concerns from the people of Leicester.

I don't recall asking them to do so. Naturally I found the incident disgusting, who wouldn't? There are atrocities happening around the world on a daily basis, why are 'the people of Leicester' conveying their concerns here?”
