Students held a candlelit vigil yesterday in memory of the Indian rape victim who died in December after a savage attack.

About 100 students and staff marched from the De Montfort University campus centre to Magazine Square for the event, which was organised by the university's Indian Society. The victim was attacked in Delhi after getting on to a bus to go home following a trip to the cinema with a friend.

Her death has led to protests in India against the government's treatment of rape victims.

Tarun Chawla, chairman of the Indian Society, said: "Like many people, we wanted to express our condolences to the family and thought the candlelit vigil was the best way to show our solidarity and pray the victim's soul rests in peace.
