Sport is a big part of the lives of staff at SGP Property and Facilities Management.

The Leicester company is always keen to back activities and teams – but they have now taken matters a step further by supporting the 2012 Leicester Mercury Sports Awards.

SGP is sponsor of the Active4Life category, which is aimed at highlighting – and rewarding – people who have taken up sport to bring about a change in lifestyle.

Beverley Hooper lifted the trophy for 2011 after joining a Charnwood Borough Council jogging programme to boost her fitness. As a result, she progressed to competing as an amateur athlete, then set about assisting others by launching her own running course.

Head of marketing David House said SGP had been attracted to sponsor the Active4Life category partly by the range of people and activities it can cover.

"It looks at older people as well," he said. "Sport is often considered a younger person's activity, but it has the power to turn people lives around whatever their age, giving them renewed vigour. The stories that we get from that might be highly inspirational."

SGP's involvement in sport covers events from football teams to an "ironman" event – swimming, cycling and running – which has become an annual feature.

The company is working on a charity bike ride in 2013 which will see participants ride from Leicester to London and back again in a day, helping to raise funds for Rainbows hospice.

"Backing sports teams is good for our clients because they feel we are supporting them," said Mr House. "But within our company the more fit, healthy and focused people we can have has to be beneficial to us."

On a personal front, Mr House hopes the county's highest-profile sides might be able to take their own ambitions one step further in 2013. SGP will be corporate hosts at Leicester Tigers and would be thrilled to see rugby's major domestic prize, the Aviva Premiership, land up back at Welford Road. "2012 was a nearly year for local sports teams," Mr House said. "Tigers got to the play-off final and Leicester City didn't quite make promotion. Both being successful in 2013 is what we are looking for."

The winners of the 2012 Leicester Mercury Sports Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Welford Road on January 17.
