Work on a new £2.25 million health centre is due to be completed by next spring.

The building will provide a new home for Freeman's Common Health Centre, ranked one of the poorest surgery buildings in the city.

One of the features of the new Victoria Park Health Centre will be a "green" roof, a self-contained wild flower garden aimed at attracting bees and other insects.

Planting and landscaping is also being carried out by the developers, Assura.

The surgery will serve students and staff from the University of Leicester and it will cater for local residents.

There are also plans for pharmacy to operate from the building.

Simon Gould, Assura's development manager, said: "The wet summer put us back a little but work has now caught up and the building should have its roof and windows by Christmas.."
